Royal Birkdale Golf Club
This page preserves Royal Birkdale’s place in an earlier edition of The Global Golfer Top 100. Rankings are time-specific editorial snapshots, not permanent statements of fact, so the historical position previously shown here should not be read as a current world ranking.
For current planning, use TGG’s structured Royal Birkdale Course Intelligence profile and the separate 2026 visitor guide. Those pages carry the up-to-date course-planning layer, visitor information, England’s Golf Coast connections and Stay · Play · Recover context.
Why Royal Birkdale remains important to a Golf Coast itinerary
Royal Birkdale is one of the defining championship links on England’s Golf Coast. For visiting golfers, its value is not just historical: it can anchor a Southport-based trip with Hillside and Formby close by, while Royal Lytham & St Annes adds a contrasting strategic test further north.
The modern TGG approach is to build the trip around live tee-time availability rather than around a fixed ranking or a generic “must-play” list. Secure the hardest booking first, then sequence the remaining rounds, travel and recovery around it.
Course character
Birkdale’s routing moves through substantial dune corridors, with fairways frequently framed by sand hills and a strategic premium on position. Wind direction can materially change the playing problem, so conservative targets and sensible club selection are often more valuable than forcing distance.
Historic Open Championship moments remain part of the course’s identity, but TGG now keeps those stories separate from current visitor logistics and from any present-day comparative ranking.
Current visitor planning
Visitor access, prices and operating arrangements change. For 2026/27, Royal Birkdale’s published visitor information centres standard visitor tee times principally on Mondays and Thursdays, with Wednesdays used for its Birkdale Open Experience. The course was also closed from 22 June to 26 July 2026 for The 154th Open Championship.
Rather than retaining the older fee and weekday claims that appeared on this archive page, TGG directs readers to the current visitor guide and the club’s own booking information before non-refundable travel is committed.
Build the England’s Golf Coast Course Swing
- Royal Birkdale: use as the Southport anchor when the tee time is available.
- Royal Lytham & St Annes: add for a more bunker-led strategic contrast.
- Formby: use for links-and-pine variety and a natural bridge towards Liverpool.
- Hillside: add when another Southport links round fits the group’s schedule and recovery.
- Royal Liverpool: extend to Hoylake when Liverpool or the Wirral is part of the wider journey.
