Editor’s Note: Tom Watson made the pilgrimage. Ben Crenshaw called it the most fun he’d ever had on a golf course. Tiger Woods played it the day before the 2000 Open. Royal Dornoch sits 60 miles north of Inverness in the Highland wilderness — the most remote great course in Europe — and its isolation is entirely part of its power. Donald Ross learned his craft here before emigrating to America and designing Pinehurst No. 2 in its image.

4. Hole-by-Hole Strategy
Hole 6 — Whinny Brae (Par 3, 163 Yards)
- Strategy: The first of Royal Dornoch’s great par 3s — played from a high tee across gorse-covered rough to a raised plateau green with Dornoch Firth as backdrop. The green’s canted surface rejects anything not precisely struck. The view from this tee is the finest in Scottish golf.
Hole 14 — Foxy (Par 4, 445 Yards)
- Strategy: Royal Dornoch’s most celebrated hole — consistently rated one of the greatest par 4s in the world. A blind tee shot over a ridge, then a long second to a green perched on a promontory with the Firth below on three sides. Pure links golf at its most elemental.
Hole 18 — Home (Par 5, 456 Yards)
- Strategy: A reachable par 5 finishing below Dornoch Cathedral — the approach runs uphill to a plateau green with the spire framing the backdrop. Watson and Crenshaw both speak of standing on this green and feeling they had reached the source of the game.
5. The 19th Hole — Where to Stay & Dine
- Royal Dornoch Castle Hotel (Boutique 4★): The finest hotel in the town — 5 minutes’ walk to the first tee. Book via Expedia →
- Skibo Castle (Carnegie Club): Andrew Carnegie’s Highland castle 10 minutes away — one of Scotland’s most extraordinary private experiences.
- 2 Quail Restaurant, Dornoch: The finest restaurant in the Highlands — a tiny BYOB with six tables, exceptional Scottish produce. Book months in advance.
