Location: Wentworth, Surrey, England  |  Ranking: #53 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Heathland/Woodland  |  Designer: Harry Colt (1926), renovated Ernie Els (2014)

Editor’s Note: The West Course at Wentworth is English golf’s most televised stage — host of the BMW PGA Championship and the World Match Play Championship for decades. Harry Colt’s original design through Surrey’s pine and birch woodland was significantly enhanced by Ernie Els’s 2014 renovation, which stretched the course and toughened the green complexes. The Burma Road — as the West Course is nicknamed — is one of the most demanding closes in European Tour golf.

Key Notes & 19th Hole

  • The Burma Road: So named by American Ryder Cup players in 1953 who found the closing stretch as arduous as the wartime road. The 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th — over 2,000 yards combined — is genuinely one of the most demanding finishes on the European Tour.
  • Hole 18 — Par 5, 542 Yards: The most famous finishing hole in European Tour golf — a right-to-left dogleg with the Wentworth clubhouse framing the finish. The crowd atmosphere during the BMW PGA makes this one of the great spectating experiences in European golf.
  • Pennyhill Park (5★): England rugby’s training base and a superb spa hotel — 15 minutes from Wentworth. Book via Expedia →
