The Course

Fulford Golf Club sits on the southern outskirts of York — a mature parkland of great elegance on flat, well-drained ground where the River Ouse marks the boundary on one side and stands of mature oak and ash frame most of the fairways. The course has hosted the Benson & Hedges International on multiple occasions, and the playing quality demanded by those events is evident in the way the layout is designed and maintained.

The course plays to a par of 72 and stretches to over 6,700 yards from the back tees — a genuine championship test that works equally well for the mid-handicapper. The flatness of the terrain means that shot-making rather than athleticism determines the score; the course rewards the player who understands their distances, manages the wind and executes precise approaches to greens that are well-bunkered and quick in summer conditions.

Fulford’s greatest asset for the visiting golfer is its proximity to York — one of England’s most historically rich and culturally engaging cities. A round at Fulford followed by an afternoon and evening in York constitutes one of the finest golf-and-culture combinations in England, and the presence of The Grand Hotel with its spa makes a complete Stay · Play · Recover day genuinely achievable.

Key Notes
  • York is the real draw — plan to spend time in the city before or after the round; the Shambles and Minster alone are worth the trip
  • The flat terrain means shot selection and distance control are everything — power is less important than precision here
  • Visitor tee times available throughout the week — book ahead for weekends
  • The Grand Hotel & Spa in York centre is the ideal Stay · Play · Recover base — 10 minutes from the course
  • Combine with Ganton or Moortown for a two or three-day Yorkshire golf itinerary of real quality
  • The course plays firm and fast in summer — the ball releases significantly on the fairways
