Links coast, city access, Cheshire recovery
The North West can be a pure championship-links pilgrimage, a city-based golf weekend or a softer golf-and-spa escape. The right base changes the trip completely.
Royal Birkdale, Royal Liverpool and Royal Lytham anchor the region’s strongest golf journey.
Strong access to Hoylake and the Wirral with a more energetic post-round base.
Parkland, spa and country-hotel options suit couples and mixed-interest groups.
A practical arrival point for wider North West itineraries rather than the main links base.
Three different North West golf breaks
Do not treat Lancashire, the Wirral, Cheshire and Manchester as one interchangeable destination. The strongest itineraries concentrate the golf rather than adding unnecessary transfers.
England’s Golf Coast
Southport, Hoylake and Lytham create one of Europe’s most concentrated championship-golf corridors.
Cheshire
Cheshire works better as a resort-led break than as an extension of a Southport links itinerary.
Liverpool & Manchester
Liverpool is the more natural golf city for Hoylake and the Wirral; Manchester works best as a gateway or business-led base.
Match the base to the golf
Keep the Open venues close
For a links-led break, use Southport, Hoylake or Lytham as the primary base and avoid dragging Manchester or central Cheshire into the itinerary unless there is a clear reason.
- Southport for Royal Birkdale, Hillside and Formby.
- Hoylake or Liverpool for Royal Liverpool and the Wirral.
- Lytham for Royal Lytham and a quieter Lancashire stay.
Move inland deliberately
Cheshire becomes more compelling when spa, resort facilities, countryside and non-golf time matter. Treat it as a distinct break rather than an afterthought to the links coast.
Choose coast, city or countryside
Tell TGG your dates, group size, preferred courses and how much recovery or city time you want. The Concierge can route the journey without turning the North West into one long transfer.
