Ballybunion Old Course

Ballybunion’s Old Course sits beside the Atlantic in County Kerry, moving through towering dunes, exposed ground and natural landforms that make line selection, trajectory control and recovery imagination central to the round.

The club was established in 1893. The Old Course evolved over time, with Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay involved in major work in the 1930s, while later refinements were associated with Tom Watson. The modern club lists the Old Course at 6,739 yards from the blue tees, par 71.

Why play Ballybunion

Ballybunion is a links where the ground itself shapes the decisions. Blind and partially hidden targets, uneven stances, Atlantic wind and severe dune contours mean the golfer has to trust lines, control flight and use the slopes rather than simply play to flat-yardage numbers.

That makes it an important anchor for a west-of-Ireland golf trip, particularly when combined with other Atlantic links rather than treated as a one-course destination.

Course character

  • Terrain: high natural dunes, exposed coastal ground and pronounced elevation changes.
  • Visibility: several shots require commitment to lines that are not fully visible from the tee.
  • Wind: Atlantic exposure makes trajectory control essential.
  • Ground game: natural slopes can either feed the ball into position or exaggerate a poor line.
  • Recovery: dunes and rough can turn a small miss into a difficult next shot, so conservative positioning has real value.

Notable holes

The opening hole immediately establishes the course’s unusual character, with the graveyard close to play and a demanding approach into a contoured green.

The 7th runs along the cliffline and can become a severe wind-management test when the prevailing conditions strengthen.

The 11th, “Watsons” is closely associated with Tom Watson and is one of the most recognisable holes on the Old Course. Its demands come from length, position and the challenge of controlling the second shot in exposed conditions.

Playing intelligence

Trust the line. Several shots require commitment over or around hidden ground; hesitation is often more damaging than a committed swing on the correct line.

Keep the ball down when the wind demands it. A lower flight can reduce exposure and keep the ball working with the terrain.

Use the slopes deliberately. The safest route is not always directly at the flag. Ground contours can feed a conservative shot into a better position.

Protect the score in the dunes. When position is lost, accept the recovery. Trying to manufacture a heroic second shot can turn one mistake into two.

Visitor planning

Ballybunion welcomes visiting golfers during the published visitor season. For 2026, the club lists visitor tee times on the Old Course on weekday mornings from mid-April to early October, excluding Bank Holiday Mondays, with weekends reserved for members.

Current green fees, exact tee-time allocations, handicap requirements, caddie availability and course-condition information should always be checked directly with the club before travel because these details are seasonal and can change.

Stay · Play · Recover

Stay: Ballybunion itself is the simplest base if the Old Course is the priority, while a broader County Kerry itinerary can justify moving between coastal towns.

Play: combine Ballybunion with other west-coast links according to transfer time and tee-time availability. Lahinch adds a very different Atlantic test further north.

Recover: expect wind, uneven lies and walking over dunes to add fatigue. Build in hydration, mobility and enough time between rounds rather than compressing every day.
