Swinley Forest is a compact Berkshire heathland course where architecture, angle and position matter more than raw length. Its pine, heather, azalea and rhododendron setting gives the course a distinctly quiet character, while Harry Colt’s routing uses elevation and undulating greens to create a strategic test throughout.
Visitor intelligence
The club welcomes a limited number of visitors and societies on weekdays throughout the year, but only by prior arrangement. There is no assumption of open public tee-time access, so Swinley should be treated as an availability-first course when building a London, Surrey or Berkshire golf trip.

Course character
At 6,431 yards from the back tees, Swinley is not built around modern championship length. The challenge comes from the relationship between tee angle, bunkering, heathland ground and undulating greens. The course contains two par fives, eleven par fours and five par threes, so the shorter holes form a particularly important part of the round.
Build a Berkshire & Surrey heathland Course Swing
- Swinley Forest: availability-first anchor because visitor places are deliberately limited.
- Sunningdale: add when dates and visitor access align for a second major heathland round.
- The Berkshire: useful for keeping the trip geographically compact around Ascot and the surrounding heathland belt.
- Wentworth or Walton Heath: extend the trip when the group wants a broader Surrey/Berkshire itinerary rather than a single-base weekend.

Swinley works well as part of a London-edge golf journey because the drive distances between the main heathland courses can remain relatively short. Build the trip around the hardest tee time first, then sequence the remaining rounds and recovery around that anchor rather than forcing a fixed daily schedule.
