Position before power
The Old Course is a mature parkland test where the most useful tee shot is the one that keeps the next angle clear. Its tournament history gives the round stature, but its day-to-day appeal lies in varied strategic golf, established trees and a setting that feels calm and complete.
Two early holes that establish the method
Start with position
Club guidance: the hole moves right to left. Only the longest hitters should challenge the corner. The dependable play is centre fairway, followed by an approach that avoids finishing short-right of the green.
Use the bunker as the line—not the destination
Club guidance: the left fairway bunker is the visual target but must be avoided. Allow for the uphill approach and consider one extra club; short shots can find sand or roll well away from the putting surface.
