Location: Erin, Wisconsin, USA  |  Ranking: #62 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Links-style  |  Designer: David McLay Kidd (2010)

Editor’s Note: Erin Hills hosted the 2017 US Open — Brooks Koepka’s first major title — on a links-style course built on Wisconsin’s glacial moraines. David McLay Kidd created a course of extraordinary scale: wide fairways, fescue rough and a routing that uses the kettle moraine landscape as naturally as any links uses its dunes. The 2017 US Open produced scores far lower than expected; Erin Hills’ generous fairways reward aggressive play and punish nothing but the wild miss.

Key Notes & 19th Hole

  • The Scale: At 8,164 yards from the back tees, Erin Hills is among the longest courses in the world. The US Open played it at 7,741; from forward tees it is accessible and enjoyable for mid-handicappers. Choose your tee boxes carefully.
  • The Moraines: Wisconsin’s glacial landscape provides 50-foot elevation changes throughout the routing — unusual for a “links” course but entirely natural. The views across the kettle moraine country from the 11th tee are magnificent.
  • Milwaukee: 40 minutes east — excellent craft brewery scene, the Milwaukee Art Museum and America’s most underrated bratwurst culture. Milwaukee hotels via Expedia →
