Start with Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes and Formby as the three-course core, then add Hillside or Royal Liverpool only when the schedule and recovery profile justify another full round.

The three-course core

1. Royal Birkdale — set the Southport anchor

Royal Birkdale is the highest-cost and most schedule-sensitive round in the core swing. Its 2026 visitor pricing was £450 in March–April and £495 from May–October. In 2026 the club hosted The 154th Open, with the course closed to visitor play from 22 June to 26 July. For future trips, use Birkdale availability as one of the first dates to test rather than assuming it can be dropped into an existing itinerary later.

2. Royal Lytham & St Annes — make bunker strategy part of the booking decision

Royal Lytham changes the strategic problem. The club lists 166 pot bunkers and recommends Green tees for men and Orange tees for women. Its published 2026 weekday visitor fee was £400 per person from 1 April to 30 September. The practical first-visit rule is to accept the club’s tee guidance unless your carry distances clearly justify moving back.

3. Formby — the contrast round between Southport and Liverpool

Formby adds a different visual and strategic texture through links turf and pine-lined holes. For April–September 2026 the club lists £285 Monday–Friday and £315 at weekends. Weekend days are member competition days, so live visitor availability matters; the club also asks visitors for a current recognised handicap certificate.

The strongest three-round pattern

Royal Birkdale: use the hardest-to-secure Southport tee time as the first anchor.
Royal Lytham: place it where you can arrive prepared rather than immediately after a rushed transfer or 36-hole day.
Formby: use it as the contrast round and as a natural bridge between Southport and Liverpool/Wirral travel.

The written order is not compulsory. If Royal Lytham is the scarce booking for your dates, build around Lytham instead. TGG’s Course Swing logic is deliberately availability-first.

When to add Hillside or Royal Liverpool

Hillside

Add Hillside when you are already based in Southport and want another full links round without a meaningful transfer. TGG is deliberately not quoting a current visitor fee here until the club’s current tariff is directly revalidated.

Add Royal Liverpool when the trip extends towards Hoylake, Liverpool or the Wirral. It makes more sense as part of a wider England’s Golf Coast route than as an automatic fourth round squeezed into a short Lancashire stay.

Stay · Play · Recover

Stay: use Southport as the practical base for Royal Birkdale and Hillside; move only when Royal Lytham or the Liverpool/Wirral leg makes the transfer worthwhile. Play: protect the three core rounds rather than automatically adding a fourth or fifth because the courses look close on a map. Recover: a lighter arrival day, practice session or non-golf period between demanding walking rounds can improve the premium rounds more than another tee time.
