  • Why Play It: Nicklaus’s only course in Portugal — and his finest in Europe. Set in the Eastern Algarve’s rolling hills, with each hole occupying its own secluded valley. The private members’ club atmosphere provides an experience entirely apart from the resort courses to the west.

  • Designer: Nick Faldo

  • Why Play It: Host of the DP World Tour’s Portugal Masters. Faldo’s design combines spectacular water features with the sweeping views of the Algarve interior. The back nine has produced some of the tour’s most dramatic finishes.

Practical Information

  • Best Time to Visit: April–May for green fees (30% lower than peak), ideal temperatures (20–24°C) and no queues. October–November for the same conditions and autumn light.
  • Getting There: Faro Airport (FAO) — direct flights from most UK airports, 2h 30m from London. Car hire essential; courses are spread across 50km of coastline.
  • Green Fees: Quinta do Lago South from €245 / Monte Rei from €295 / Vale do Lobo Royal from €195
  • Handicap Required: No formal requirement at most Algarve courses, though the resort courses recommend 28 or under for enjoyment.
