Region: Ayrshire, Scotland  |  Best Time: May–September  |  Nearest Airport: Glasgow Prestwick (PIK) — 10 mins; Glasgow International (GLA) — 45 mins

Editor’s Note: Ayrshire is Scotland’s most diverse golf region — from the birthplace of The Open at Old Prestwick to Turnberry’s clifftop drama, from the purity of Western Gailes to the accessibility of Royal Troon. Add the whisky distilleries, dramatic Clyde coast scenery and Culzean Castle, and you have the most complete golf journey in Scotland.

The 5 Courses to Play

1. Trump Turnberry — Ailsa Course ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Willie Fernie (1906), Mackenzie Ross (1951)
  • Par / Yardage: 70 / 7,204 yards  |  Rating: 76.1 / 145
  • Why Play It: The Lighthouse Hole (9th) — played along the Firth of Clyde clifftops toward Turnberry Lighthouse — is the most dramatic hole in British golf. Host of four Open Championships including Watson’s Duel in the Sun (1977) and Watson’s near-miracle at 59 (2009). The hotel’s renovation to Grand Resort standard makes this the complete experience.

2. Royal Troon — Old Course ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Charles Hunter, extended Willie Fernie
  • Par / Yardage: 71 / 7,179 yards  |  Rating: 75.8 / 141
  • Why Play It: Home of the Postage Stamp — the 8th hole, a par 3 of just 123 yards, is the shortest and most famous hole in Open Championship history. The back nine is relentlessly exposed to Firth of Clyde winds. Members-only Tuesday and Thursday visitor access; advance booking essential.

3. Old Prestwick Golf Club ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Tom Morris Sr. — birthplace of The Open (1860)
  • Par / Yardage: 71 / 6,544 yards  |  Rating: 73.5 / 140
  • Why Play It: The original. The first 12 Opens were held here; the course has changed little since. Cardinal Bunker on the 3rd is perhaps the most famous hazard in golf history. A pilgrimage for any golfer who loves the history of the game above all else.

4. Western Gailes Golf Club ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Willie Park Jr.
  • Par / Yardage: 71 / 6,720 yards  |  Rating: 73.4 / 136
  • Why Play It: The “Riviera of Scottish Golf” — every hole runs parallel to the sea, making this the most natural links layout in Ayrshire. Purist links golf in its most unadorned form. Often overlooked by visitors focusing on Troon and Turnberry; those who play it invariably rate it higher.

5. Dundonald Links ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Kyle Phillips (2003)
  • Par / Yardage: 71 / 7,158 yards  |  Rating: 74.2 / 137
  • Why Play It: The most accessible championship course in Ayrshire. Open to all visitors year-round with no handicap restriction. Host of the Scottish Open; the exposed links layout regularly produces the lowest scoring on the DP World Tour.
