Editor’s Note: Madrid’s golf scene is Spain’s least-exported secret. The capital sits 650 metres above sea level on the Meseta Central — Spain’s great plateau — and the surrounding countryside contains some of the country’s most architecturally significant courses, built for the Spanish golfing aristocracy in the 1960s and 1970s. Club de Campo Villa de Madrid hosted the World Cup of Golf when Nicklaus and Palmer played; La Herrería was designed by Javier Arana, Spain’s finest golf architect. Combined with Madrid’s extraordinary food culture, the Prado, and the best pintxos in Europe, this is golf travel with genuine cultural depth.

The 5 Courses to Play

1. Club de Campo Villa de Madrid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Javier Arana (1932)  |  Par/Yardage: 72 / 6,906 yards  |  Rating: 74.4 / 137
  • Why Play It: Spain’s most historically significant course — built within Madrid’s Casa de Campo royal park and host of the 1965 and 1992 World Cup of Golf. Arana’s mature pine-forest layout has an almost Scandinavian character; the condition is exceptional. Walking the same fairways as Nicklaus, Palmer and Ballesteros is a privilege that remains largely undiscovered by international visitors.

2. La Moraleja Golf — Course I ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Jack Nicklaus (1976)  |  Par/Yardage: 72 / 6,744 yards  |  Rating: 73.8 / 136
  • Why Play It: Nicklaus’s first European design — in the wealthy northern suburbs of Madrid, La Moraleja Course I retains the broad, strategic fairways and severe green complexes of his golden era. Four courses on the estate make this the most complete golf complex near any European capital. Host of the Madrid Open (European Tour) for many years.

3. Real Club de Golf La Herrería ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Javier Arana (1965)  |  Par/Yardage: 72 / 6,460 yards
  • Why Play It: In the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama below El Escorial — Arana’s finest course. The combination of granite outcroppings, pine forests and the historic monastery of El Escorial visible from multiple holes creates a uniquely Spanish atmosphere. The most naturally beautiful course within 60km of Madrid.

4. Centro Nacional de Golf — Olivar de la Hinojosa ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Ron Kirby & José María Olazábal (1992)  |  Par/Yardage: 72 / 6,924 yards
  • Why Play It: Spain’s national golf centre and host of the 1997 European Tour Open de España — Olazábal’s input ensures a demanding, intelligent layout. Located in Madrid’s business district, 20 minutes from Barajas Airport — ideal for a pre-flight or post-arrival round. The most accessible championship course in the Spanish capital.

5. Real Sociedad Hípica Española Club de Campo ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • Designer: Javier Arana (1954)  |  Par/Yardage: 72 / 6,448 yards
  • Why Play It: Madrid’s most exclusive club — polo, equestrian sport and golf coexist on a 700-acre estate 10 minutes from the city centre. Arana’s mature parkland design through holm oaks and stone pines is impeccable. Accessible by introduction through the membership; the post-round lunch in the members’ clubhouse is Madrid dining at its finest.
