The Global Golfer Top 100
Gothenburg Golf Club
Göteborg, Sweden  ·  #27 in the World

Location: Göteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden  |  Ranking: #27 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Heathland/Parkland  |  Partner Stay: Hotel Gothia Towers; Radisson Blu Scandinavia

Editor’s Note: Scandinavia’s greatest golf course sits on the Swedish west coast — a Willie Park Jr. design from 1891 that has been refined into one of Europe’s finest tests of strategic golf. The combination of heathland, pine forest and the dramatic outcrops of Swedish granite creates a visual character entirely distinct from links or parkland golf. Host of the Volvo Masters and European Senior Tour events, Gothenburg GC is a revelation for UK golfers who have never considered Sweden a golf destination.

Key Strategy Notes

  • The Granite: Swedish bedrock outcrops frame multiple holes — not as hazards but as dramatic natural borders that give each corridor a distinctive character. The visual framing of fairways by pink and grey granite is unique in European golf.
  • Midsummer Golf: A round starting at 7pm in late June at Gothenburg GC — with the sun still high and golden light filtering through the pines — is one of the most memorable experiences in European golf travel.
  • Holes 14–18: The closing five holes are consistently rated the strongest finish of any course in Scandinavia — a relentless sequence of demanding par 4s and par 5s through pine corridors.

The 19th Hole

  • Hotel Gothia Towers (4★): Gothenburg’s iconic twin towers hotel — central, excellent and 25 minutes from the course. Book via Expedia →
  • Gothenburg’s Fish Market (Feskekôrka): The finest seafood in Scandinavia — pick your own fish at the covered market then eat at one of the adjacent restaurants. Non-negotiable post-round dining.
