The Course
The course at Hanbury Manor was designed by Jack Nicklaus II — the son of the Golden Bear — and opened in 1990 as part of the conversion of a 17th-century Jacobean manor house into one of Hertfordshire’s leading golf resorts. The design reflects the Nicklaus philosophy: strategic water features, demanding but fair bunkering, and greens that require precision in both direction and distance to approach effectively.
The course stretches to over 7,000 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 72 — a genuine championship test that has hosted the English Open and numerous corporate events since its opening. The Hertfordshire parkland setting is attractive without being dramatic: mature trees, gently rolling ground and the River Rib forming a natural boundary on several holes. The conditioning, maintained to the standards expected of a Marriott Autograph Collection property, is consistently reliable.
Hanbury Manor’s real strength as a golf destination is the totality of the resort experience rather than the course alone. The Jacobean manor house — restored to an impressive standard — provides a hotel of genuine character, and the spa and leisure facilities complete a Stay · Play · Recover offering that works as well for partners and non-golfers as it does for the most committed players.
- Stay at the hotel — it provides priority tee times and the best access to spa recovery facilities
- The River Rib holes on the back nine require careful club selection over the water
- Golf and spa packages are well-structured and represent genuine value for two-night stays
- The Jacobean manor dining is reliable — the Zodiac restaurant is the fine dining option worth booking
- 40 minutes from central London via the A10 — easy access for a day trip or overnight break from the city
- The Grove (30 minutes west) makes a natural companion course for a two-day Hertfordshire golf break
