Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia | Ranking: #45 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Sandbelt | Designer: Dan Soutar, bunkering Alister MacKenzie (1925)
Editor’s Note: MacKenzie added his bunkering to Kingston Heath’s existing layout and transformed it — as he did at Royal Melbourne — into one of the Southern Hemisphere’s finest courses. The balance between the layout’s natural routing and MacKenzie’s surgical bunkering is perfectly achieved; no hole feels overworked and no bunker seems gratuitous. Many who have played both rate Kingston Heath’s hole-by-hole quality above even Royal Melbourne West.

Key Notes & 19th Hole
- MacKenzie’s Bunkers: At Kingston Heath, MacKenzie placed bunkers to punish the incorrect angle of approach — not merely the missed shot. Understanding the intended line from each tee is essential; the bunkers reveal the correct route and punish those who ignore it.
- Crown Towers Melbourne (5★): The Sandbelt’s best base — also close to Metropolitan and Commonwealth. Book via Expedia →
