Location: Sunningdale, Berkshire, England  |  Ranking: #51 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Heathland  |  Designer: Harry Colt (1923)

Editor’s Note: Harry Colt designed the New Course 22 years after Willie Park Jr.’s Old Course — and created something arguably more testing. The New Course is longer, the bunkering more severe and the green complexes more demanding. Many scratch golfers quietly prefer the New to the Old. Together they form the finest 36-hole heathland complex in England — a complete day’s golf of extraordinary quality within 30 minutes of Heathrow.

Key Strategy Notes

  • Hole 5 — Par 4, 475 Yards: The hardest hole on the New Course — a long dogleg right through mature pines with a narrow approach corridor. Club selection from the tee determines everything; too far right and the trees block the approach.
  • 36 Holes in a Day: Play Old in the morning, New in the afternoon — the definitive Sunningdale experience. Book both through the Secretary’s office.

The 19th Hole

  • Coworth Park (5★): 20 minutes from Sunningdale — Dorchester Collection luxury in the Berkshire countryside. Book via Expedia →
  • The Dormy House, Sunningdale: On-site overnight accommodation — the most convenient base for back-to-back rounds on both courses.
