Why Portstewart matters on the Causeway Coast
The Strand Course is a natural complement to Royal Portrush in a north-coast itinerary. Its opening stretch through the dunes gives Portstewart a distinctive playing character, while the short transfer between the two clubs makes it useful for a compact two- or three-course journey.
The modern TGG approach is to treat Portstewart as part of a connected golf journey rather than as a fixed ranking number. Build around the most difficult tee time first, then sequence Portstewart, Royal Portrush, travel and recovery around it.
Course character
The Strand combines high dune corridors, exposed coastal holes and strong changes in elevation. Wind can alter both the preferred line and the effective yardage, so good planning is less about chasing a scorecard number and more about controlling trajectory, position and recovery between demanding rounds.
The Strand hosted the 2017 Irish Open, which forms part of the course’s modern championship history. TGG keeps that record separate from older comparative claims such as “best”, “finest” or a permanent world-ranking position.
