Location: Bethpage, Long Island, New York, USA  |  Ranking: #44 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Parkland  |  Designer: A.W. Tillinghast (1936), restored Rees Jones (2002)

Editor’s Note: The sign at the 1st tee reads: “Warning — The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers.” It is not exaggerating. Bethpage Black is one of the most demanding public courses in the world — a massive, muscular A.W. Tillinghast design that hosted Tiger’s 2002 US Open and Padraig Harrington’s 2009 PGA Championship. The sign at the 1st tee has been photographed more than almost any other object in golf.

Key Notes & 19th Hole

  • The Queue: New Yorkers camp overnight in their cars at the parking lot for a morning tee time — a uniquely New York experience. Online booking opens at midnight 2 days prior; times go in minutes.
  • Tiger’s 2002 US Open: Tiger won here by 3 shots in front of the most raucous championship galleries in modern history — the Long Island crowd’s roars are part of Bethpage Black’s legend.
  • New York City: 45 minutes from Bethpage — combine a round here with Manhattan, the Hamptons or the North Fork wine country. New York hotels via Expedia →
