What changed in 2026

Monte Rei’s current golf page says the North Course has completed an extensive six-month enhancement programme in collaboration with Nicklaus Design. The work included restoration of greens and bunkers, expanded teeing areas, enhanced practice facilities, infrastructure upgrades, landscape improvements and a more sustainable approach to course maintenance.

That matters for current trip planning because earlier 2026 information referred to a temporary April-to-September closure. The club’s current golf page now presents the enhancement as completed and is again offering direct online golf booking.

How it plays

Monte Rei is built around generous driving corridors rather than a relentless squeeze from the tee, but the second shot often carries the decision-making. Valleys, mature trees and changing ground levels create distinct angles into the greens, so the useful question is not simply how far you can hit it, but where the next shot is best played from.

For most visiting golfers, sensible tee selection will matter more than chasing the full back-tee yardage. The course is designed to remain playable for mixed-handicap groups while still rewarding stronger players who take on the more demanding lines.

Course Swing · Eastern Algarve

Monte Rei works especially well as the anchor course in an eastern Algarve trip. A practical four-course swing is:

2. Quinta do Vale
3. Quinta da Ria
4. Quinta de Cima

Using an eastern Algarve base keeps transfers shorter than trying to combine every round with the central-Algarve resort belt, and it gives the trip a clearer identity: one headline resort course supported by three contrasting nearby rounds. See the Algarve golf guide for the wider region.

Stay · Play · Recover

Stay

Monte Rei currently offers Clubhouse Residences and villa accommodation, allowing golfers to stay inside the resort rather than build each round around a hotel transfer.

Play

Book the North Course first and structure the rest of the swing around that tee time. The resort’s current golf experience also includes a driving range, short-game areas, putting green and swing studio, so there is scope for practice or coaching around the main round.

Recover

Current resort accommodation gives guests access to leisure facilities including pools, gymnasium and sauna, with spa facilities also available within the existing Veranda leisure area. That creates a genuine recovery option without relying on the separate future hotel-and-spa development.

Important: Monte Rei’s future Nobu hotel and broader new hotel/spa development are not presented here as current facilities. They remain future projects.
