- Why Play It: Consistently ranked the #1 course at Bandon and among the top 10 in America — Doak’s masterpiece uses the natural dune ridges and Pacific cliff-tops to create a course that feels entirely inevitable. The 11th, 12th and 13th along the cliffs form golf’s finest three-hole stretch after Cypress Point’s 15–16–17. Walking only; caddies available and recommended.

2. Bandon Dunes — David McLay Kidd ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

- Why Play It: The original that started the revolution. Kidd was 29 when Keiser hired him — unknown, untested. The result launched both a career and an American golf renaissance. Seven holes on the Pacific cliffs; the course feels Scottish despite being distinctly Oregon. The sunset from the 16th tee over the Pacific is golf’s finest view.

3. Sheep Ranch — Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw (2020) | Par/Yardage: No fixed par — 18 holes on the Pacific headland
- Why Play It: Bandon’s newest and most spectacular course — every single hole has an ocean view from a clifftop headland above Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. No fairway bunkers; no trees; no distractions — just sea, sky and the most elemental golf course built in the 21st century. The no-fixed-par scoring format is part of its radical spirit.

4. Bandon Trails — Coore & Crenshaw ⭐⭐⭐⭐

- Why Play It: The inland course — through native forest, Scotch broom meadows and coastal dunes. The least ocean-facing of the Bandon courses but considered by many the most architecturally sophisticated. The variety of terrain within 18 holes is extraordinary; no two holes feel remotely the same.

5. Old Macdonald — Doak & Urbina ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Tom Doak & Jim Urbina, inspired by C.B. Macdonald (2010) | Par/Yardage: 71 / 6,960 yards
- Why Play It: A tribute to C.B. Macdonald’s “ideal hole” concept — each hole is based on a classic template (Alps, Biarritz, Redan, Road Hole, etc.) reimagined for the Oregon dunes. A love letter to golf architecture that rewards those who know the references. The massive, multi-tiered greens are among the most entertaining putting surfaces in the world.

Where to Stay & Practical Information

- Chrome Lake Cottages: Private cottage accommodation on the resort — the most peaceful way to stay. Ideal for groups of 4–8.
- Getting There: Fly to Portland (PDX) or Eugene (EUG), then drive south on Highway 101 — 3h 30m from Portland, 2h 30m from Eugene. The coastal drive is spectacular. Alternatively, North Bend Airport (OTH) is 30 minutes away and accepts charter flights.
- Important: Walking only — no carts. All five courses are walking pace on firm Oregon turf. Caddies available at all courses; strongly recommended for first-time visitors to Pacific Dunes and Sheep Ranch.
