The Course

Queenwood opened in 2001 and immediately established itself as one of the most significant additions to Surrey golf in a generation. Kyle Phillips — the American designer responsible for Kingsbarns in Scotland — created a heathland course of extraordinary quality on land that had previously been a horseracing gallop, shaping fairways through mature heather and pine with a design intelligence that makes the layout feel entirely at home in the Surrey landscape despite being less than thirty years old.

The course stretches to around 7,100 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 72. It is the conditioning more than the length that defines the Queenwood experience — the fairways are immaculate, the heather perfectly maintained as a natural hazard, and the greens among the finest in the world, comparable to Augusta National in their consistency and pace. The club employs more greenkeeping staff per hole than almost any other course in Britain, and the result is self-evident.

The design is thoughtful without being tricky — each hole presents a clear challenge, a preferred line, and a genuine reward for executing the correct shot. There are no arbitrary penalties at Queenwood; the course is demanding because golf is demanding when played at the highest standard of preparation. The back nine in particular is outstanding, with a closing stretch that builds pressure in a way few modern courses achieve.

The Club

Queenwood is one of a small number of genuinely exclusive golf clubs in Britain — membership is by invitation only, the membership is capped, and the waiting list is long. The service standards are those of a five-star hotel rather than a golf club, and the entire experience — from arrival to departure — is managed with a precision that reflects the ambition of the founding vision. If the opportunity to play Queenwood as a guest presents itself, it should not be declined.

Key Notes
  • Access is via member invitation only — among the most exclusive courses in the world
  • The conditioning is the finest in English golf — play it in any season and it will be immaculate
  • The greens are exceptionally fast — adjust your putting pace before the first hole, not the third
  • The back nine closing stretch from the 14th is among the finest sequences in modern British golf
  • Queenwood sits adjacent to Foxhills — a two-day Surrey visit combining both is a genuinely exceptional experience
  • Pennyhill Park is the natural Stay · Play · Recover base — equidistant between Queenwood, Wentworth and Sunningdale
