The Course
Harry Colt designed St George’s Hill in 1913 on the elevated ground of a private residential estate above Weybridge — 27 holes routed through towering Scots pines, silver birches and heathland that has been carefully preserved for over a century. The result is one of the most atmospherically distinctive golf experiences in Surrey: enclosed, hushed and entirely removed from the world outside the estate gates.
The club operates 27 holes arranged into three nines — the Red, Blue and Green — which can be combined in various pairings to create an 18-hole round. The Red and Blue combination is the most celebrated and forms the standard visitor experience. Together they measure around 6,500 yards to a par of 70, but the yardage understates the challenge: the elevated terrain creates constant changes in elevation, and the tall pines that line every fairway mean that even a modest deviation off the tee results in a blocked shot.
Colt’s genius here was in using the natural topography rather than fighting it — the fairways follow the contours of the hill, the greens are sited to make the approach angle critical, and the overall routing creates a sense of journey through the landscape that few courses of any era achieve. Walking St George’s Hill is as much an aesthetic experience as a sporting one.
The Club & Setting
St George’s Hill operates within one of Britain’s most exclusive private residential estates — the gatehouse entry, the manicured roads and the visible grandeur of the surrounding properties all contribute to a sense of occasion that begins before the first tee. The club itself is well-appointed and the welcome for guests gracious. Membership is by proposal; guest access requires a member host.
- Play Red and Blue nines — the standard 18-hole combination and the stronger pairing
- The elevated terrain demands careful club selection — many uphill holes play a full club longer than the yardage
- The pines are genuinely in play — accuracy off the tee is non-negotiable
- Autumn is spectacular — the silver birches turn gold against the pines in October
- Access via member invitation — treat the round as the historical occasion it is
- Great Fosters or Pennyhill Park are ideal Stay · Play · Recover bases — both within 20 minutes
