Region: Sotogrande, Costa del Sol, Andalusia, Spain | Best Time: March–June & September–November | Nearest Airport: Gibraltar (GIB) — 20 mins; Málaga (AGP) — 1h 20m
Editor’s Note: No golf destination in continental Europe matches Sotogrande for prestige, quality and concentration of world-class courses. Valderrama alone makes the journey worthwhile — the Augusta of Europe. But the surrounding courses of La Reserva, Real Club and Almenara make this Spain’s undisputed golf capital. The polo, beach clubs and Michelin dining complete a lifestyle proposition unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean.
The 5 Courses to Play
1. Club de Golf Valderrama ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1974)
- Par / Yardage: 71 / 6,951 yards | Rating: 75.2 / 138
- Why Play It: Ranked the best course in continental Europe and host of the 1997 Ryder Cup. The legendary 17th — a short par 5 with a waterfall, pond and the famous cork tree guard — is one of the most strategically brilliant holes ever designed. Rees Jones later softened several holes; the Roberts-era severity remains extraordinary.

2. La Reserva Club Sotogrande ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Cabell Robinson
- Par / Yardage: 72 / 7,020 yards | Rating: 73.9 / 136
- Why Play It: The newest and most scenic course in Sotogrande — sweeping views of Gibraltar, Morocco and the Mediterranean from virtually every tee. The clubhouse and beach club make this the most complete golf-lifestyle experience on the Costa del Sol.

3. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Robert Trent Jones Sr. (1964)
- Par / Yardage: 72 / 6,832 yards | Rating: 73.1 / 132
- Why Play It: The oldest and most traditional of the Sotogrande courses — tree-lined parkland with the Rio Palmones running through. Jones created Valderrama here first, then refined it one valley over. Old money, exceptional condition and a clubhouse lunch worth the trip alone.

4. Almenara Golf Club ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Dave Thomas
- Par / Yardage: 72 / 6,925 yards | Rating: 73.5 / 134
- Why Play It: 27 holes across cork oak forests — the most walkable course in Sotogrande. The elevated tees offer extraordinary views over the resort. Perfect for the visiting golfer who wants a relaxed, scenic round without the formality of Valderrama.

5. San Roque Club — Old Course ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Designer: Dave Thomas & Tony Jacklin
- Par / Yardage: 72 / 6,712 yards | Rating: 72.8 / 133
- Why Play It: Host of the Volvo Masters and European Tour events — Tony Jacklin’s masterpiece balances challenge and beauty. The 18th hole’s dramatic drop to a valley green, with Gibraltar as backdrop, rivals any finish in Europe. Excellent value relative to the prestige.
