The Courses
East Dorset Golf Club sits in the Dorset heathland outside Verwood, a landscape of sandy soils, heather, silver birch and pine that shares its character with the great Surrey and Hampshire heathland venues without quite matching their reputation. This anonymity works in the visitor’s favour — the courses are well-designed, consistently maintained and available at green fees that many comparable heathland venues no longer offer.
The Lakeland Course is the flagship of the two — an 18-hole layout of genuine quality that uses the natural heathland terrain to create holes of real interest and some difficulty. Water comes into play on several key holes, demanding decision-making on approaches, and the greens are firm and true in a way that rewards commitment over hesitation. The Woodland Course offers a more enclosed, shorter and somewhat more forgiving experience that suits groups of mixed ability or golfers looking for a less demanding follow-up round.
The heathland setting gives East Dorset a quality of light and atmosphere that pure parkland venues cannot replicate — the silver birches in morning sunlight, the heather in August bloom, the ground underfoot firm and fast in summer. It is a type of golf that rewards patient, intelligent play and punishes lateral thinking.
The Clubhouse
The clubhouse is well-run and unpretentious, with catering that satisfies the post-round appetite and a team that manages the balance between member club and visitor venue with evident competence. The pro shop is well stocked and the overall operation reflects a business that understands its product and its customers.
- Play the Lakeland Course first — it is the stronger of the two and sets the standard for the visit
- August is exceptional if heather is in bloom — the purple across the fairway margins is genuinely striking
- The sandy subsoil means both courses drain exceptionally well — accessible year-round when comparable venues are closed
- Combine with Purbeck Golf Club for a full Dorset heathland and coastal golf weekend
- The New Forest is immediately adjacent — an outstanding area for walking, cycling and recovery activities between rounds
- Bournemouth and Christchurch offer strong dining and coastal recovery options within 20 minutes
