Visitors Welcome

“Purbeck Golf Club is one of the most dramatically positioned courses in the South of England — elevated above the Jurassic Coast with views across Swanage Bay, the chalk stacks of Old Harry Rocks and, on clear days, the Isle of Wight. The golf is honest and demanding; the setting is something else entirely.”

The Course

Purbeck Golf Club sits on the high chalk downland above Studland on the Isle of Purbeck — a peninsula of extraordinary natural beauty that contains some of the most protected coastline in England. The course occupies ground with views that few venues in the South can approach: Swanage Bay below, Old Harry Rocks visible to the north-east, the Purbeck Hills rolling to the west and Poole Harbour glittering beyond. Playing golf here is an experience that exists in the landscape in a way that parkland courses rarely achieve.

The course itself plays across open, firm, wind-influenced downland — turf that rewards the low running game and punishes the aerial approach that UK golfers default to instinctively. The wind is the decisive variable. What reads as a manageable iron from the card becomes a full driver decision when the south-westerly comes in off the Channel; the course plays entirely differently in two rounds a week apart. This is exactly what makes it worth returning to.

The Jurassic Coast designation means the surrounding landscape is managed with exceptional care — the wildflowers, the chalk grassland, the heath beyond the boundary all contribute to an experience that sits as much in ecology as in architecture. There are holes here that exist nowhere else in English golf, and the visitor who plays Purbeck once tends to return.

The Clubhouse

The clubhouse is modest and functional — a reflection of a club whose members come for the golf and the landscape rather than the facilities. The catering is adequate, the bar is welcoming and the welcome extended to visitors is genuine. Swanage itself, a short drive below, provides excellent alternatives for post-round food and accommodation.

Key Notes
  • The views from holes 3, 7 and 16 across Swanage Bay are among the finest of any English course — take time to appreciate them
  • Wind is the defining condition — check the forecast and adjust club selection throughout the round, not just on exposed holes
  • Old Harry Rocks are visible from the higher ground — the walk to Handfast Point after the round is one of England’s great short coastal walks
  • Combine with East Dorset Golf Club for a full Dorset golf weekend covering heathland and coastal downland
  • Studland Beach — one of England’s finest — is immediately below the course: an exceptional recovery destination after the round
  • The chain ferry from Studland to Sandbanks cuts the drive to Bournemouth significantly — useful for those basing themselves in the town
