Location: Maui, Hawaii, USA  |  Ranking: #48 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Coastal Parkland  |  Designer: Ben Crenshaw & Bill Coore (2004)

Editor’s Note: The Plantation Course at Kapalua hosts the PGA Tour’s season-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions each January — and the scores are almost always historically low. Coore and Crenshaw built a course that plays downhill to the Pacific Ocean from elevated lava fields, with trade winds at your back making the course play significantly shorter than its 7,411 yards. Rory McIlroy has won here multiple times. The Pacific views, the whale sightings offshore and the Kapalua resort make this the most complete golf destination in the Pacific.

Key Notes & 19th Hole

  • Hole 18 — Par 4, 663 Yards: The longest par 4 in PGA Tour history — but played downhill and downwind, reachable with two solid shots. The view from the fairway down to the Pacific is one of golf’s great closing vistas.
  • January Whales: Humpback whales breach offshore throughout January — regularly visible from multiple holes during the Sentry Tournament.
  • Montage Kapalua Bay (5★): The finest hotel in Hawaii — Pacific views and the best spa in the Pacific islands. Book via Expedia →
