Course Intelligence: how to approach Nairn

Respect the outward links character. Wind and firm links turf can change the effective yardage quickly; choose targets that keep the next shot playable rather than chasing a fixed carry number.
Use the full width of the course intelligently. Nairn’s challenge is not simply distance. The better decision is often the angle that gives the safest route into the next green.
Protect energy for the closing stretch. If Nairn is part of a multi-day Course Swing, avoid turning the opening holes into a maximum-effort driving session.
Use the Cameron Course strategically. The nine-hole course can work as an arrival-day loosen-up, a short-game session or a lower-intensity recovery round between Championship days.

The Nairn Ticket

The club’s 2026 Nairn Ticket is £350 and combines one round at Nairn with one at Nairn Dunbar. Both rounds must be played within any consecutive four-day period; the Nairn round is afternoon only, while Nairn Dunbar can be played morning or afternoon. For golfers building a value-led two-course stop around the town, this is one of the most useful published options to compare with buying separate green fees.

A course shaped by several eras

The club records that Andrew Simpson laid out the original course in 1887. Old Tom Morris revised and extended it westward in 1890; James Braid later altered tees, bunkers and greens; Ben Sayers designed new holes at Delnies in 1920. From 2018, Mackenzie & Ebert undertook a major renovation project. That layered history helps explain why Nairn feels established rather than manufactured: the strategy has evolved with the land.

Stay: Nairn works well as an Inverness-area base or first/last night on a wider Highland route. Play: pair the Championship Course with the Cameron Course only when the shorter round adds value rather than simply adding holes. The strongest three-course spine is Nairn, Cabot Highlands and Royal Dornoch. Book the most restricted tee time first — usually Dornoch — then fit Nairn and Cabot Highlands around it. Brora can extend the trip north; the Cameron Course, Struie or Old Petty can provide a lower-intensity extra round.

Booking risk to know before you pay

Nairn’s published cancellation policy is important on a multi-course trip: cancellations at least eight weeks before play receive a full refund less administration and bank charges; eight to four weeks receives 50%; less than four weeks receives no refund. The club recommends travel insurance. Coordinate all three headline tee times before locking in non-refundable travel.
