The Course
Ganton sits in a shallow depression in the Vale of Pickering — twelve miles from the sea, thirty from Scarborough, surrounded by flat agricultural land that gives no indication of what lies beyond the gate. And then you drive in, and the gorse comes into view. Great walls of it, six and eight feet high, lining every fairway with a severity that is immediately, unmistakably links. The sandy soil — the same glacial outwash that underlies the finest seaside courses — drains perfectly and produces turf of exceptional quality. Ganton looks, feels and plays like links golf, even thirty miles from the nearest beach.
The course stretches to over 6,700 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 73. It hosted the 1949 Ryder Cup, the 2000 Curtis Cup and the 2003 Walker Cup — a record of championship credibility that few inland courses in Britain can match. The gorse is the defining feature: not just as a visual motif but as a genuine playing hazard that closes off entire sides of fairways and demands constant accuracy from the tee.
The bunkering is deep and penal — Alister MacKenzie contributed to the course’s development, and his influence is visible in the positioning of the sand hazards, which catch precisely the shot that deserves catching. The greens are fast, true and among the best-maintained in Yorkshire. A round at Ganton in good conditions is a genuinely challenging, deeply satisfying experience that repays every mile of the journey.
The Club
Ganton is a traditional members’ club with a proper Yorkshire character — straightforward, unpretentious and welcoming to visitors who have made the effort to get there. The clubhouse is comfortable and the catering reliable. Visitor tee times are available on most weekdays and some weekends with advance notice.
- The gorse is not decorative — miss the fairway and you will be taking a penalty drop, not playing a recovery shot
- Wind direction determines everything — the course plays completely differently with the wind than against it
- Book visitor tee times well in advance — Ganton is deservedly popular and fills quickly
- The 18th green is visible from the bar — tradition dictates a drink while watching other groups finish
- Combine with Rudding Park (45 minutes) for a Yorkshire Stay · Play · Recover break of real quality
- The North Yorkshire Moors are 20 minutes away — build in exploration time around the golf
Rudding Park Hotel & Spa
