The Course
Leckhampton Golf Club sits on the lower slopes of Leckhampton Hill on the southern edge of Cheltenham, occupying ground that rises sharply from the town and provides some of the finest elevated views in Gloucestershire. The nine-hole layout is played twice from different tee positions, a format that — when the course architect has done their work — produces a genuinely varied round, and Leckhampton’s design rewards the approach.
The terrain is the defining characteristic here. Several holes require a precise read of the gradient before club selection is possible, and approach shots that look straightforward on flat ground become genuinely testing on sloping lies. The elevated greens amplify every putting misread. None of this is punishing in a way that discourages the moderate handicapper; it is testing in a way that reveals the merit of careful, observant play.
The views across Cheltenham from the higher holes are a genuine attraction in their own right — the Regency roofline stretching out below, the Malverns visible on a clear day, and the distinctive outline of Cheltenham Racecourse visible to the north. There is a quality to this kind of English hillside club — rooted, local, quietly proud — that larger venues rarely replicate.
The Clubhouse
The clubhouse reflects the club’s character — modest in scale, comfortable in atmosphere and reflective of a membership that plays here because they love this specific piece of ground, not because they need a venue to impress guests. Visitors are made welcome and the informality is one of the round’s pleasures rather than a limitation.
- Nine holes played twice — the different tee positions genuinely alter the character of each hole, so pay attention on the first nine to prepare for the second
- The elevation means wind can arrive suddenly and from unexpected directions — club up on the exposed upper holes
- Views from the higher holes are exceptional in clear weather — worth pausing on the 5th and 8th to take them in
- Combine with Cheltenham Golf Club and Cotswold Hills for a full Cheltenham-area golf day
- The Hill itself is a nature reserve — the walk to and from some holes has a character entirely its own
- Green fees are among the most accessible in the area — an ideal introduction to Cheltenham golf for visitors to the town
