Visitors Welcome

“Lansdown is the kind of elevated downland course that rewards the visitor who arrives prepared for real golf — open to the sky, exposed to the wind and set on ground with more history than almost anywhere in the English game. The views alone justify the drive up the hill; the golf more than justifies staying for the full eighteen.”

The Course

Lansdown Golf Club occupies the plateau above Bath on one of the most historically significant pieces of ground in the West of England. The Battle of Lansdown was fought here in 1643 during the Civil War, and the Lansdown Monument — erected to commemorate Sir Bevil Grenville — stands visible from several holes, lending the round a sense of historical depth that few English courses can match. Golf has been played on this ground since 1894, and the course has developed the quiet authority that comes with more than a century of continuous play.

The layout is a genuine downland examination — open, firm when dry, and entirely subject to the wind that crosses the plateau with varying intention throughout the day. Distances are deceptive when playing into a headwind on the exposed upper holes, and the par-threes in particular require the kind of honest self-assessment that links golf demands at its best. The course does not forgive inaccuracy but never feels unfair — every bad shot has a comprehensible cause, and the good shots are properly rewarded.

The views from the higher sections of the course are among the finest of any course near Bath — the city’s Georgian roofline below, the Avon Valley stretching to the west, and on a clear day visibility extending well beyond Bristol towards the Severn Estuary. Bath itself is an immediate and excellent reason to extend the visit well beyond the clubhouse.

The Clubhouse

The clubhouse is comfortable and well-run, with a catering operation that caters well to post-round appetite and a bar that functions at the relaxed pace the setting encourages. The welcome extended to visitors is genuine and the pro shop is well-equipped for a course of this size and character.
