The Course

Cheltenham Golf Club occupies a quietly distinguished position in Gloucestershire golf — not the most dramatic course in the county, nor the most celebrated, but one of the most consistently satisfying. Set on the eastern fringe of Cheltenham, the parkland layout winds through mature trees on undulating ground that demands both accuracy off the tee and a thoughtful approach to the subtly contoured greens.

The course plays to a par of 70 and measures just under 6,300 yards from the back tees — shorter than many modern parkland layouts, but the length is deceptive. Tight tree-lined fairways reduce the premium on distance and increase the premium on direction, and the greens — firm, fast and intelligently bunkered — punish the approach that fails to account for the slope. This is a course that rewards course management over raw power, and one that plays very differently in winter (softer, slower, more forgiving) than in a dry English summer (firmer, quicker, more severe).

The opening holes establish the character of the round — a par four that bends gently left through mature oaks, followed by a longer par four that requires a well-placed drive to open the second shot. The course builds through a mid-section of genuine variety before reaching its best stretch in the closing holes, where the elevation changes become more pronounced and the views across Cheltenham and towards the Malvern Hills open up on clear days.

The Signature Holes

The par three 7th is the course’s most discussed hole — a mid-iron across broken ground to a well-defended green, where the left-side bunker collects anything that drifts with the slope. Club selection here is everything; the pin position changes the equation entirely.

The 14th, a long par four that plays slightly uphill into the prevailing wind, is the sternest test of the back nine. A drive that finds the left rough leaves an almost impossible angle; the right side of the fairway is the only platform from which the green can be properly attacked. The golfer who makes par here in windy conditions has earned it.

The Clubhouse & Welcome

Cheltenham Golf Club is a members’ club with a relaxed attitude to visitors — booking in advance is sensible, particularly at weekends, but the welcome is genuine and the facilities adequate for a day’s golf. The clubhouse is comfortable without being elaborate, and the catering covers the essentials well. This is not a resort; it is a proper golf club, and the atmosphere reflects that.

Key Notes
  • Book visitor tee times in advance — weekends are busiest, weekday mornings offer the best experience
  • Course plays significantly firmer and faster in summer — adjust club selection accordingly on approaches
  • Tree-lined fairways make a straight driver more valuable than a long one — accuracy is paramount
  • Greens are among the best-conditioned in Gloucestershire — read them carefully, they have more pace than they appear
  • Combine with Ellenborough Park Hotel & Spa (5 minutes) for a complete Cheltenham Stay · Play · Recover break
  • The 14th into the wind is the round’s defining moment — take an extra club and stay right of centre
