The Course
Naunton Downs is the kind of course that rewards those who go looking for it. Set above the village of Naunton in the upper Windrush Valley — a part of the Cotswolds that even many locals have never explored — it sits on exposed limestone downland that gives the layout a character quite different from the wooded parkland courses closer to Cheltenham. The fairways are firm, the turf short and springy, and the wind is a factor on most days.
The layout stretches to around 6,100 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 70 — short enough that longer hitters will reach most par fours comfortably, but clever enough that the card does not give up its secrets easily. The greens are small by modern standards, well-defended and placed on ground that makes the approach angle critical. The golfer who fires straight at the pin here will quickly learn that position — not aggression — is the governing principle.
What makes Naunton Downs memorable, above all else, is the landscape. From the elevated tees on the back nine, the views stretch across the valley in a way that makes it genuinely difficult to focus on the shot at hand. The dry-stone walls that thread through the course add a specifically Cotswold character that few golf courses in England can match.
The Signature Hole
The par three 11th plays across a dry valley to a green set on the far side of the hillside — a full mid-iron on calm days, but a club or more longer into the wind. The green tilts away from the player and the runoff left leads to a recovery shot from below that tests even accomplished chippers. A hole that changes with every visit.
The Experience
Naunton Downs is a members’ club that welcomes visitors with genuine warmth. The small clubhouse is unpretentious and friendly — the kind of place where conversation is easier than at a resort, and where the bar prices reflect the golf club rather than the hotel. It is exactly what it sets out to be: a proper Cotswold golf club with a course that earns its reputation through character and setting rather than length or facilities.
- Wind is a significant factor — Naunton sits on exposed downland; check the forecast and prepare to club up
- Greens are small and firm — miss on the correct side (short and below the hole) for the easiest recovery
- The setting is the draw — allow time before and after the round to appreciate the valley views
- Combine with a night at The Slaughters Manor House or Lower Slaughter Manor for a complete experience
- The village of Bourton-on-the-Water is 10 minutes away — excellent lunch options before or after
- Best played in summer on firm ground — the course has a completely different character to a soft winter round
Lower Slaughter Manor
A Relais & Châteaux property of extraordinary intimacy set in one of the Cotswolds’ most beautiful villages — 15 minutes from Naunton Downs. The spa, gardens and dining make it the ideal overnight base for partners who want more than golf from a Cotswolds break.
