Location: Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England  |  Ranking: #61 — The Global Golfer Top 100
Type: Links  |  Designer: Herbert Fowler (1914)

Editor’s Note: Burnham & Berrow is England’s finest links course south of Lancashire — and one of the most underappreciated championship venues in Britain. Herbert Fowler built it on the Somerset coast where the Bristol Channel tides create some of the highest tidal variances in the world. The dune-lined fairways, the constant wind off the channel and the extraordinary natural character of the layout reward repeated visits and repay patient, strategic golf.

Key Notes & 19th Hole

  • The Tides: The Bristol Channel has the second-highest tidal range in the world — 15 metres. This creates an ever-changing shoreline visible from the course and a wind pattern that varies dramatically with the tidal state.
  • Somerset & Exmoor: Combine Burnham with a night at Combe House Hotel in Devon or the Luttrell Arms in Dunster — the Somerset/Devon border country is some of England’s most beautiful.
  • The Batch Hotel, Burnham: Adjacent to the course — comfortable, traditional Somerset hospitality. Book via Expedia →
